The anticipatory feeling that presides at the beginning of the school year all falls onto homecoming week. Student council, the student body as a whole, the staff and administrators all work together to provide such good energy and increase school spirit to truly highlight the qualities of our school morale. Putting a spotlight on the class of 2024, I had the privilege of speaking with a few boys on the homecoming court who also represent the football team and in each part they played for both sides of this week they truly represent what being a viking means.
My initial conversation begins with none other than QB1 Hudson Wilharm, an inside perspective of his experience allowed me to understand his feelings and thought process throughout this week. Highlighting the incredible performance from the team, and being able to acknowledge that both offensively and defensively they performed and executed at high levels as a team. Starting off strong in the first quarter Wilharm completed a pass to Charles Kilbourne at 24 yards leading to a touchdown, which was the first contribution to the 156 passing yards completed throughout the game. Overall Hoggard came out with a 44-7 score over West Brunswick for the 2023 homecoming game. Wilharm not only shined on the field for 4 quarters but as well at half time, he spent the week representing alongside 9 other seniors on the kings court including : Jermaine Armour, Pierce White, Samin Bhan, Jason Smith, Mason Morgan, Vincent Ingham, Aiden Andrews, Skyler Merrill, and David Drayton. Each and every one of these boys are spoken extremely highly of by Court Director, Shaney Ferisnger and obviously well admired by the student body to have the privilege of earning court. Wilharm states “I will forever hold the memory of getting to represent hoggard on and off the field, through playing that night as well as being on the court.”
A similar experience is told through the 2023 Homecoming King, Jermaine Armour.
Armour’s main goal was to do his part as a teammate, so the week ran smoothly despite the hum of festivities. His application and focus on football did not fall short as proven by the win. Insight into the sentiment of this win ties back to a familiar moment in Armour's family, 2 years ago Jadah Armour, now sophomore at UNC Charlotte won Homecoming Queen and following in her footsteps is Jermaine. It all comes down to being a proud member of the Hoggard community. Armour is nothing short of an admirable hoggard student, You will find him smiling at any who cross his path and constantly offering kind words of endearment to his teachers, peers, coaches, and administrators. Armour states “I held such pride in having the opportunity to represent as one of Hoggards best, the love that I felt from the school truly made the experience worth it.” The sentiment behind such a fun experience proved how deserving Armour was of this win.
There is no better feeling than Homecoming week, and to have the opportunity to speak to a few of the admirable members of the hoggard community. Queens Court included: Kris Foster, Avery Braithwaite, Jenny Garner, Mia Elder, Ashlei Summers, Jordan Gallimore, Ava Cantrill, Samantha Strahley, and Rhodes Gould. Once again, congratulations to our homecoming royalty of 2023, King - Jermaine Armour, Queen - Avery Braithwaite, Prince - Samin Bhan, Princess - Kris Foster. It was a privilege to watch this group of students participate in such an exciting week with such modesty and respect.
