March 30, 2021

After a long, arduous workout and tryout process, the 2021 Hoggard Men's Tennis team roster has been finalized and the match season has had a promising start. The team has won all of their away games thus far, and won two of their three home games, giving them an overall 5-1 winning record in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference. Even more exciting, in the NC Class 4A Tennis Standings, Hoggard has a 5-0 winning record.

The top six on the team play in the deciding matches and competition was fierce to snag one of these spots. The current top six are Dalton Feldman, Varun Varadarajan, Quaid Sutherland, Jake Morris, Samin Bhan, with the sixth spot being shared by Grant Sutherland and Sarthak Mishra.

Three freshmen joined the team this year: Samin Bhan, Wells Lee, and Grant Sutherland. Ridge Earnheart is representing the sophomore class, and there are a whopping seven juniors: Ryan Boaz, Dalton Feldman, Hank Hudson, Sarthek Mishra, Kevin O’Malley, Jack Rollins, and Varun Varadarajan, from Isaac Bear Early College High School. Seniors on the team include Jake Morris and Quaid Sutherland, the team captain and older brother to Grant Sutherland. “Our team’s chemistry both on and off the court is amazing,” says Samin, “which is one of the key reasons why we succeed and have fun while we are at it.”

Dalton, Samin, and Jake all have 5-1 winning records for singles matches, and Varun has a 5-0 winning record. Quaid has a 6-0, Sarthek has a 3-0, and Jack and Wells have a 1-0 winning record for singles. Quaid and Varun played together in doubles, as did Samin and Dalton, both with a winning record of 4-1. Sarthek and Jake have won all three of their doubles matches, and Ridge and Kevin won their only match.

One of the most exciting matches of the season is coming up on Monday, April 5, at 4:00pm: a home conference match against New Hanover High School. The team will have seven matches following this one. The team has had a successful season so far, and they are sure to keep bringing home the W for Hoggard!
