To Do: Wilmington, NC

Updated: Jun 11

Are you tired of doing the same activities every summer, wishing you could think of some more fun ways to spend your free time? Believe it or not, Wilmington is full of exciting things to do this summer that you may not have thought of. Here are just a few examples:

Battleship North Carolina: Many may forget, or not even realize, that Wilmington is home to a piece of World War II history: The Battleship North Carolina. Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve been, or you’ve never been at all, but consider checking out the unique ship this summer.

Carolina & Wrightsville Beaches: Going to the beach is a go-to activity in the summer, but more can be done at Carolina and Wrightsville beaches than just swimming and surfing. Carolina Beach has many shops and food stops, such as Britts Donuts. There are also fireworks put on every Thursday night. Wrightsville Beach has the Loop where you can walk or run with friends, taking you across the bridges and onto the beach. There are also courts where you can try out pickleball as well as shops and food stops, such as Trolly Stop and Tower 7.

Concerts: Greenfield Lake Amphitheater and Live Oak Bank Pavilion will be home to multiple concerts over the summer that you can enjoy!

Defy & Flip N Fly: Trampoline parks are always exciting and can be a great stop on an extra hot or rainy day. Wilmington has two you can choose from; Defy is located off of Market Street and Flip N Fly is located inside of Mayfaire.

Downtown Wilmington: Downtown can be a great place to explore. You can go into various shops, and get food at places such as Slice of Life and amazing ice cream at Kilwins.

Filming: Something special about Wilmington is all of the times the city has appeared on screen as the backdrop of popular movies and shows, such as Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. More recently, Wilmington has served as the fictional town of Cousins Beach in the popular Prime show The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on Jenny Han's book trilogy. It is easy to get involved as an extra in the various productions being filmed here this summer! Facebook pages “Cherrix Casting” and “Stewart Casting” post casting calls for local productions. All you have to do is find a casting call you match and then email in the required information. If you get picked you can spend a fun day filming, and get paid for it too.

New Hanover County Arboretum: The Arboretum is a beautiful location in Wilmington. It is free to go inside and look at all the nature and structures. There is also a pond filled with Koi fish that you can feed! It’d be a great location for a picnic with friends.

Wilmington also has some delicious local places to dine and get dessert. Osteria Cicchetti, Our Crepes and More, Islands Fresh Mex Grill, K-38, Malama Cafe, and  P.T. 's Grill are some of my favorite restaurants. Apple Annies, Boomballati’s, and Fuzzy Peach all have amazing desserts.

We are lucky to live in such a unique city with lots to do, and I hope you take the time to check out some of these cool options this summer.
