When the heat hits hard, there’s one thing almost everyone can agree on: ice cream is a must! Wilmington has many sweet treat options, but which one truly stands out as the best? After looking at local favorites and variety, a few shops stand out as superior:

     1) Boombalatti's Homemade Ice Cream

Known for its creative flavors and locally made ingredients, Boombalatti’s has built a strong reputation in Wilmington. From classic options like chocolate and vanilla to more unique combinations like cold brew ice cream floats, there’s something for all tastes. The shop also offers vegan and dairy-free options, plus they don't add artificial colors, making it accessible to more people. What really sets it apart though is the fresh and perfectly creamy taste, making it feel like a true local gem.

     2) Kilwins

Located downtown near the Riverwalk and at The Pointe, Kilwins offers more of a traditional ice cream experience with an expansive variety of rich flavors that never disappoint. In addition to ice cream, they also sell fudge, truffles, and candy apples (all made in house–which you can watch from the front windows), making it a great stop for anyone's sweet treat craving. The location adds to the experience, especially for people looking to walk around downtown.

     3) Wandering Cone Creamery

A smaller shop known for its homemade, small-batch ice cream. This spot is perfect for people who like trying new and unique flavors. The ingredients are simple and high-quality, and the menu often changes, giving customers a reason to come back and see what’s new.

Other places like STAX Ice Cream Kitchen, Crispy Cones, and Bruster’s Real Ice Cream are great honorable mentions as well. While they may not take the top spots, they still offer great desserts and are popular among locals. All in all, the “best” ice cream shop really depends on personal taste/opinion. Some people prefer classic flavors, while others want something new and different. Still, Boombalatti’s stands out as Wilmington’s top choice because of its quality, creativity, fun events like “Fill the Cup,” and strong local support. Go try them all yourself as no matter where you go, one thing is certain, Wilmington has plenty of great places to cool off with a scoop of ice cream.
