From Farm to Table: Supporting Local Farmers This Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us are thinking about the food we'll gather around the table— but have you ever thought about where that food comes from? Food produced by industrial farms negatively impacts the environment by using large amounts of pesticides, water and soil contamination, and inefficient land use. This Thanksgiving, consider buying from local farmers to benefit the environment, economy, and your health.

Buying local food is better for the environment, as it cuts down on the fossil fuel consumption, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions associated with transporting food from far away. Additionally, local food is typically cultivated without herbicides or pesticides, meaning that animals aren’t adversely affected by its production.

Buying local isn’t just good for the environment; it’s good for the economy. According to Utah State University, it is estimated that buying local keeps approximately 65% of your dollar within the community, whereas shopping at large chain stores keeps only 40%. This money goes to employing local farmers and providing local jobs.

Finally, buying local food can be better for your health. Locally-grown food has a shorter supply chain since it doesn’t need to be transported large distances, so there are less opportunities for bacterial or viral contamination. Local farms also have the capacity to pick produce when it is most ripe, producing the most nutrient-rich fruit and vegetables possible.

If you’re interested in supporting some local farmers this Thanksgiving, here are some great local farmers’ markets:

The Wilmington Farmers Market at Tidal Creek

According to the website, it is a “producer-only market,” which means they only sell what they produce, including “local produce, microgreens, honey, plants, herbs, flowers, eggs, and their farm raised meats, and shellfish.”

Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market

The Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market occurs every Monday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm between May and December. It takes place on the Wrightsville Beach Municipal Grounds, and features fresh, locally-grown produce, other edible goods, and craft vendors.
