I have loved sushi ever since I was a kid, and the variety and different colors are enticing to any avid food lover. I have tried many sushi places, but my favorite in Wilmington has to be Genki Sushi Japanese Restaurant near Plato’s Closet on New Center Drive.
Genki is a very small restaurant with only about 20 tables and a long sushi bar where you can watch the chefs wield their knives. You’ll be greeted by friendly hosts and presented with a warm steamy towel to wipe your hands, which may seem odd but is quite refreshing.
My favorite part of the meal is the starting dish - a small bowl of edamame and seaweed. Now it may not sound appetizing, but this truly special treat is both salty and sweet with a perfect texture of creamy beans and crunchy seaweed. Customers should also try some miso soup for only $5, which is a delicious soup made from soybean paste in a light broth mixed with tofu, seaweed, and scallions with a smoky rich flavor.

The Genki menu is vast and plentiful, with such foods as jackfish, octopus, eel, crab, and tuna as well as many vegetarian options. I am personally a huge fan of the “AAAAAMMMMMAAAAZZZING crunchy crab roll.” And, in case you’re wondering… yes, that is actually what it says on the menu. This roll consists of crab, avocado, and other delectable ingredients served with a dip of soy sauce that melts on your tongue. It truly never fails to make me smile, and I have eaten this roll dozens of times.
If you are nervous about raw fish or seaweed, Genki offers a wide variety of cooked options, especially as appetizers, including shumai (steamed dumplings), tempura, spring rolls, bang bang shrimp, and fried squid tentacles.
In addition to all types of sushi, customers can also enjoy an array of desserts, including mochi, which is ice cream wrapped in rice dough that comes in a variety of flavors including mango, chocolate, red bean, or vanilla.
I recommend this spot to any food aficionado as a place with great service, food, and atmosphere. If you are on a budget, it is fun to go with a group and order a few small dishes and try different things. Just always make sure to grab a reservation because I'm one of many who know how amazing this destination is.
