Like most aspects of this year’s academic scene, Science Olympiad was not able to escape the effects of hybrid/virtual education. Instead of a day-long, stress-turned-triumph day filled with long shots, cross-campus sprints from test to test, and cheering on teammates, all culminating with award ceremony shenanigans, this year, participants competed from their computers at home.
All events were virtual and split up over two weekends. This online format looked different for all events. Some events easily transitioned to an online format, with only minor changes or cuts to the event content. Some events were harder to move online, resulting in inefficiency, surprises, or opportunities for competitors to engage in academic dishonesty. While talking about the competition, senior varsity competitor Conor Kerr immediately pointed out the technical difficulties as a major factor that altered the events from their original form.
Senior varsity competitor Anna Patsalos, when asked what she would remember about her last Science Olympiad regional tournament, commented, “I think I’ll remember how we were able to push through any challenges we encountered in the new style of competition and how we worked together to succeed in a uniquely difficult year.”
The Vikings certainly persevered, sweeping the competition and placing first at the regional competition. Out of the 24 total events, Hoggard’s varsity team won 9 events, placed 2nd in 5, and 3rd in 5 more, defending their regional champion status. The JV2, JV1, and JV 3 teams placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively.
The state competition is scheduled for April 23-24. Wish the varsity team luck as they take on the next level of virtual competition!
