Romcom on the Football Field: A First in Hoggard History

On a chilly evening in February, students waddled through the gates, arms full with camping chairs and warm blankets, prepared for a night of fun and film at Braswell Stadium. Friends huddled together on the field, munching on popcorn under stadium lights, as cult-classic 10 Things I Hate About You played on the jumbotron. Good company and a classic setting came together to create a quintessential high school experience that attendees are sure to look back on with nostalgia.

Moments like these don't just drop out of thin air. After the cancellation of what would have been Hoggard’s first movie night in December, the Student Council Officer Team, along with advisor Mrs. Fersinger got straight to work following winter break in order to bring this long awaited project to life. Former Homecoming King, Dane Walger, was brought on to capture the event’s best moments on camera and Ms. Hall put in tremendous effort to prepare concessions. A special thank you is in order as well, to the Student Council volunteers who braved the cold to collect donations and greet guests, contributing to a casual and welcoming atmosphere.

The best part about February’s movie night is that its impact didn’t end when the credits started rolling, but instead spread to our local community. In the weeks leading up to the event, Student Council coordinated with Wilmington’s Domestic Violence Shelter to accept donations in the place of admission tickets. By the end of the night, they had collected nearly 2 carloads of donations to be supplied to women in need.

Due to the overall success of February’s Movie Night and the overwhelming support of the school community, Student Council is planning on carrying out an additional Movie Night in April.
