The Hoggard chapter of the National Beta Club recently attended and competed in the North Carolina State Beta Convention. In a regular year, twenty or so Vikings would have hopped onto a bus and driven up to Greensboro, where the convention is held. This trip, usually made the first weekend in February, had to be canceled because of COVID-19 restrictions and regulations. In its place, a virtual convention was held throughout the month of February.
This year, Hoggard’s delegation of twenty-seven Betas were given the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of competitions, ranging from art contests to show choir to academic tests. Our resident Beta Club Vice President and member of the Chronicle, junior Cooper Hyldahl, ran for state office as a presidential candidate! Running for state office is open to any 10th or 11th-grade Beta who attends the convention.
Many Hoggard students competed in academic competitions. With subjects like French and Agriscience, there is certainly something for everyone. This year, all of Hoggard’s finalists competed in an academic competition. Sophomore Ryan Langtry competed in and won the agriscience academic competition for his division. Along with Langtry, Hoggard had six other Vikings place in their respective competitions. A full list of Hoggard’s finalists and their events is provided below.

Sahil Patel (1st Place, 10th Grade Math)
Simone Cronier (1st Place, 10th Grade Spanish)
Chloé Scatton-Tessier (1st Place, French)
Michelle Lamas (2nd Place, 12th Grade Language Arts)
Deacon Ball (3rd Place, 9th Grade Social Studies)
Erin Johnston (5th Place, 12th Grade Math)
Because they all placed at the state level, these seven Vikings are all eligible to participate at the National Convention, which will be held in Orlando, Florida this year. If they choose to compete, we wish them the best of luck.
