As we approach the end of fall and transition into early winter, our playlists and song choices shift too. With dropping temperatures and shorter days, nothing’s better than curling up indoors with a blanket, a warm drink, and the perfect music ambiance. Some albums seem like they were made to capture these moments. Whether it’s acoustic harmonies that pair ideally with fireside conversations, or mellow jazz that hums softly in the background, cozy albums hold the power of transforming cool conditions into something deeply soothing. Here are five records that make fabulous additions to crisp mornings and long, chilly nights.

  1. For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver

Written by Justin Vernon as a debut studio album, this collection of folk songs embody major themes of love, loss, and loneliness. It also explores the possibility of growth and rebirth after hardship. Lyrically, it is known for its raw and often melancholy sound, showcased by Vernon’s falsetto and soft musical arrangements. A few key tracks include “Skinny Love,” a breakthrough song that brought the album and band stronger recognition, and “Flume,” featuring a beautiful yet gloomy tone.

  1. Evermore by Taylor Swift

It’s not truly the fall-to-winter passing period without a Taylor Swift song playing in the background. This emotional album explores themes of love and heartbreak through fictional narratives, with a focus on stories including longing, grief, and nostalgia. This album is often associated with the fall and winter seasons due to its symbolism of peace, quiet, and thoughtful reflection. Evermore is an excellent soundtrack for driving to school or experiencing the occasional snowfall in North Carolina.

  1. Blue by Joni Mitchell

Written entirely by Mitchell, this album’s charming feel and wintery themes make it a perfect choice for cold weather listening. It's renowned for its natural vulnerability, poetic songwriting, and slim instrumentation. It highlights a range of emotion, from downheartedness to joy. Widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time, Blue is celebrated for its complex, “heroine’s journey” nickname.

  1. Hozier by Hozier

Released in 2014, Hozier’s self-titled album sets the tone for sentimental value. Its complex guitar riffs, percussion, and soulful vocals are sure to live up to your cozy music standards. The lead songs on the album, “Take Me to Church,” “Like Real People Do,” and “Work Song,” are some of Hozier’s most popular hits. Its indie vibes are perfect to chill out to or shuffle into your seasonal playlist.

  1. Melodrama by Lorde

Lorde’s second studio album Melodrama guarantees a song to accompany any mood you may be in. While the colder months can often put us in dreary states, her single “Green Light,” and her song “Supercut,” will surely brighten your mood with their satisfying harmonies and gradual climb to toe-tapping beats. The album also features songs for quiet, more serious moods such as the serene, piano track “Liability,” and the touching ballad “Writer In The Dark.”

In the midst of cold weather, cozy albums offer more than just something to pop your Airpods in and hit play to. They create feelings of comfort and connection. They’re perfect for immersing yourself in, to drown out the hectic outside world for a while. They invite imagination and a touch of calm, capturing just the right moments of tranquil stillness. Ultimately, these albums remind us that even in the coldest seasons, music has the power to make us feel at home.
