Not going to school everyday has been a very weird experience for all of us. But, one advantage of only going a few days a week is the amount of free time you have. Before the pandemic, I didn’t have time to do anything that I liked to do, with the stress of school and sports. But recently I’ve started to get back into one of my favorite hobbies: reading. I’ve read quite a few books in the past months, and my favorite one is The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. With millions of copies sold and a film adaptation, this book has really impacted a lot of people, including me.
The Hate U Give is a book about a Starr Carter, a sixteen year old black girl who experiences copious amounts of racism, police brutality, and rioting after watching her unarmed black friend, Khalil, get shot and killed by the police. Starr has so many things stacked up against her in the book, and it was really inspiring to see how she handled everything, and grew as a person along the way.
My favorite quote from the book is “What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?” This was said by Starr when she was deciding whether or not to testify to the lawyers about Khalil’s death. She was so scared to do it, but she knew she needed to give her friend justice. I agree with Starr, it is so important to use your voice on things that really matter and are important to you. Although being silent would’ve been the safer option for Starr, she overcame her fear and used her voice for good.
I think The Hate U Give will probably forever be my favorite book. I’ve always been really passionate about human rights and the BLM movement, and this book really helped me see into the lives of people who were discriminated against. It was honestly the most impactful book I’ve ever read. Words cannot describe how amazing the writing, storytelling, and character development is in this book. I highly recommend reading The Hate U Give, you won’t regret it!
