Everyone has a specific taste in music, whether it’s a song you always have on repeat, an artist you relate to, or a genre that you love. But have you ever thought about what your individual playlists actually say about you?

Music is more than just a song we put on our playlist. It can express relatable or inspiring

topics of our generation, such as mental health, love, and life experiences. These feelings allow others to feel understood from the lyrics or the melody. According to Psychology Today, music is an effective way to express your identity, in addition to being an outlet for emotions.

Music influences us in ways beyond just relatability. It can shape both external and internal factors, including fashion sense, lifestyle, aesthetic, and even our values and beliefs. According to a study conducted by Spotify, music preferences can be used to predict personality traits in an individual. People tend to connect to artists who have similar personalities or lifestyles to them, and may even unconsciously try to mirror an artist that they admire.

As we go through different stages of our lives, our music taste may change with it. This is because the music we like adapts to our ever-changing values and perspectives. Since we use music as a way to express our identity, it is only natural for our music preferences to reflect that.

With concerts and large music festivals being a prominent part of our generation, live music brings people closer together. Concerts allow similar-minded people to come together and connect with one another.

So next time you put in your headphones, think about whether your playlist reflects how you want to be viewed. Our taste in music may be more than just a matter of simple preferences. After all, it defines who we are.
