Energy drinks have become extremely popular, especially among teenagers and young adults trying to keep up with busy schedules filled with schoolwork, sports, and social events. If you have seen me at school, you’ve probably noticed me double-fisting a Monster and an Alani in between classes or while studying. With flashy cans and promises of instant energy, brands like Alani, Red Bull, Celsius, and Bloom claim to help people stay focused and energized. However, not everyone agrees with energy drinks being the best choice. Some people prefer alternatives such as coffee, tea, or soda instead. By examining different opinions and options, we can better decide which energy source is actually the best.


Popular Energy Drinks: Red Bull, Monster, Celsius, and Alani

Popular energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster, Celsius, and Alani are known for their high caffeine content and wide variety of flavors. Many fans enjoy how quickly these drinks provide an energy boost, helping them get through long days, workouts, or late-night study sessions. They are also easy to find in almost any convenience store or grocery store, which adds to their popularity.


However, the high sugar content in drinks like Red Bull and Monster has caused many consumers to gravitate toward options like Alani and Celsius. These brands are sugar-free but still provide a strong energy boost. For many people, this feels like a healthier choice because it avoids the sugar crash while still delivering caffeine.


Hoggard senior Callie Braithwaite shared that her favorite energy drinks are Alani’s Sherbet Swirl and Strawberry Sunrise. “They taste like if candy was carbonated, and don’t taste like formaldehyde like Celsius,” said Braithwaite. I tend to agree with her—some energy drinks, especially Celsius, can taste harsh or overly artificial, while Alani feels more like a sweet treat than a chore to drink.


Alani is also praised for its wide variety of flavors, which keeps consumers from getting bored. From fruity flavors to dessert-inspired options, there is something for almost everyone. This variety, along with zero sugar and appealing packaging, makes Alani a top choice among students and young adults.


Bloom: The “Healthier” Energy Drink Option

Bloom is often marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional energy drinks. Supporters argue that it contains better ingredients and fewer harmful additives. According to Bloom fan Kate Bennington, “Bloom is not too sweet but still yummy.” Bloom is frequently praised for including vitamins, greens, and natural caffeine sources, which makes consumers feel as though they are making a healthier choice.


However, critics point out that Bloom is still an energy drink and still contains caffeine, meaning it can cause negative side effects if consumed too often. Even so, Bloom’s image as a cleaner and more balanced option makes it appealing to people who want energy without the guilt associated with traditional brands.


Alternatives: Avoiding Energy Drinks Altogether

Not everyone believes energy drinks are worth it. Some people experience crashes, headaches, or increased anxiety after consuming high levels of caffeine. Senior Mia Volety strongly dislikes energy drinks and prefers alternatives like tea, coffee, or even soda. She believes energy drinks are unnecessary and potentially harmful. “I don’t drink energy drinks because I think they’re bad for you and would make me anxious. I like to drink tea and if I’m extra sleepy, a coffee or a Coke,” said Volety.


Tea is often seen as a gentler option because it provides a smaller amount of caffeine, along with antioxidants. Coffee is another popular choice because it is more natural and customizable. People who prefer these alternatives often say they feel more in control of their energy levels, and avoid the crashes associated with energy drinks. This perspective shows that energy does not have to come from a labeled can—it can come from simpler, more natural sources.


Comparison and Final Decision

When comparing energy drinks to alternatives like tea or coffee, each option has its strengths and weaknesses. Energy drinks offer fast and convenient energy, but can lead to crashes or health concerns if overused. Alternatives like tea and coffee may take longer to work, but often feel more balanced and sustainable.


In my opinion, the best option depends on the individual. However, if I had to choose, I believe Alani is the best overall energy drink because of its wide variety of flavors, zero sugar, and affordable variety packs. While energy drinks can be helpful in certain situations, they should be consumed carefully, and alternatives should not be ignored.


In the end, the best energy source is the one that keeps you energized without harming your health—and that choice looks different for everyone.
