Early Release: The Way To Go

I have never planned to be an early “graduate.” I’m one of the people who genuinely does not want to rush growing up and will cherish these senior year moments as long as possible. The week before second semester, I received an email saying I was eligible for “early release." That is essentially the ability to graduate without technically walking on the stage yet. As long as you have three CFCC classes and no more high school requirements, you do not actually have to go to high school. I personally think this is the best possible option for a senior in high school. Here are a few reasons why.

1. You still get the complete high school experience

As an early release, you are still considered a student at your high school. This means that you are able to attend clubs, sports, and events such as prom without actually having to go to class in person. You get all the fun without actually having to get up early and go to school every day. It keeps you from feeling left out and like the last semester you will ever have in high school has suddenly vanished.

2. You are eased into college life

A lot of people struggle with the shock that comes from the overwhelming college experience. I can attest that once you are not actively in high school, life can feel very different. I live close enough to school to hear the bell. It was so strange the first time I heard the bell; I checked the time and realized it was 11am. Students in high school were close to halfway done with their day. Meanwhile, I was walking my dog. It is so weird when you enter into everyday life without the structure and life style that high school encourages. It can really be a snap into reality, but participating in early release allows you to gradually move into that lifestyle while still being at home and able to be in high school.

3. More time for doing the things you enjoy

I am now so much more free for morning Bible studies, spontaneous hangouts, and my job, because I don’t have to worry about being in high school. College schedules are a lot more relaxed depending how you go about making them. Most days I finish all my work around 2-3pm, including homework and a break. To me, that is amazing and creates much less stress in my life.

Overall, I think early release is an ideal option for your last semester of senior year, especially if you would just be taking random classes to fill in time until graduation. However, what works for one student may not work for another, so be sure you choose whatever would work best for you!
