A New Addition to Hoggard's Clubs: The “Mech” Club

       Every Wednesday, fellow Hoggard students gather in Mr. Vedder’s orchestra classroom to work on their next big project—this month, it’s a motorized bike. Led by juniors Anderson Dick and Giovanni Anderson, Hoggard’s Mechanical Club started up in spring of last year. “Me and Anderson started the club so we can learn and teach others about mechanics and how things work,” said Giovanni Anderson. Through shared experiences, and failures and successes, the members of the “Mech” club have grown close. “In the Mech club, I’ve enjoyed hanging out with friends, learning new things, and meeting new people,” states Walker Thomas, a recent addition to the crew. 

Thomas explains that during a normal meeting, “everyone arrives, signs the attendance sheet, and gets straight to work on the current project. We’re currently working on a motorized bicycle, but in the past we’ve worked on dirt bikes, and lawn mowers.” Through buying old, used machinery online, the group is able to acquire the newest projects, even occasionally selling them once they're all fixed up.

      What makes Mechanical Club so interesting, Thomas explains, is that “it allows others like me that always wanted to work on and learn more about vehicles and small engines to enjoy working hands-on with projects, and gaining knowledge on things of that nature.” If you’re interested in such things, Hoggard's Mechanical club sounds like the perfect place to be.

       Despite what one might think, you don't have to be an expert or mechanic-in-the-making to join this club. By learning as you go, anyone can join in on the action that takes place during the Mech club's weekly meetings. Giovanni Anderson states that “anyone is able to join. No special skills needed.” After having learned more about one of Hoggard's newest up and coming clubs, consider stopping by the band/orchestra room to catch the club members in action, anticipating the startup of an engine they've spent weeks working on.
